“A “modern” couple in the 1960’s sitting on a Lambretta. She is wearing a black blouse and two skirts, one with a printed pattern, the other in black-and-white striped cotton. Notice her headscarf tied “à la fleur” or “à la Versailles”, the gold necklace and her wristwatch. The man is trying to be very elegant: he is wearing a smart suit, white shirt with cufflinks, and a black tie. He has turn-ups on his trousers, black shoes, a wristwatch and a ring.”

“When you’re a photographer, you always have to come up with ideas to please the customer. My experience taught me the positions that my customers like best. You try to obtain the best pose, the most advantageous profile, because photography is an art, everything should be as close to perfection as possible. After all, the customer is only trying to look as good as possible. In Bamako we say i ka nyè tan, which in English means “you look well”, but in fact it means “you look beautiful like that”. Art is beauty.”
