LIFE with Brian
Brian Griffin: ”Martin Atkins, the designer, had sped away on his motorbike to the local town to get bacon sandwiches when I shot this image. This is the album cover for A Broken Frame (Depeche Mode). We set up in a cornfield under a grey sky just off the M11 near Saffron Walden. It had been raining all morning but the clouds suddenly parted and we had 30 minutes of glorious sunlight, magical light. I have experienced art directors claiming they did this or that shoot when they weren’t even there and this is one of those cases. Martin was waiting for the bacon! In 1989 I drove to Berlin to see the wall come down. I went into a garage at the border and there was a pile of LIFE magazines featuring the greatest photographs of the 1980's and this image was on the front cover."
